The value of “old” Council (before the change to Board Governance) was to give membership a collective voice through the delegates and to be a conduit of information to their chapters. Once the change was made to Board Governance, the collective voice was greatly changed.
Today, Council’s only actual role is to elect the Executive Committee and the RVPs in their respective caucuses. With the possible development of direct member voting, there may not be a place for Council at all. The PTG needs a renewed relationship between the Board and members through a revitalized Council. We are calling this initiative New Council.
We believe there should be a good and productive working relationship between the Board and New Council throughout the year, where the Board routinely informs New Council of their big concerns, giving those members (delegates) an opportunity to consider and discuss those concerns, from the viewpoints of their chapter members.
The suggestions of New Council would be found within the confines of its protocols, so that it does not distract the Board with individual opinions or objections. It is the hope of New Council that the Board would be willing to have a measure of dialog with them whenever it was needed. Approximately four times a year, pressing issues would be discussed within New Council, informal votes would be taken, then the outcome of those votes would be communicated to the Board, fully understanding that New Council has no authority to make the Board accept its recommendation(s). Ideally, the Board would at least be exposed to the basic opinion of the membership on specific issues.
New Council would benefit the Board and PTG by:
- Discussing and making recommendations on RFAs being considered
- Discussing and making recommendations to the Board through our own “IFCs” (Issues For Consideration)
- Getting feedback directly from membership on areas of interest to the Board
- Giving the Membership a formal place to bring concerns and suggestions for a discussion
- Having quarterly meetings, allowing RVPs to regularly connect to members in a collective setting
- Identifying new leaders through a strong, working relationship
- Creating a larger pool of involved individuals for committee staffing
We hope it is considered that this group is a positive step forward. A unified and energized New Council and Board are what is needed to help keep the PTG a vital and viable organization.
The New Council initiative directly supports the Long Term Plan
